Can I Throw Down Wildflower Seeds? | Arbor Hills Landscaping (1)

Wildflowers come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Their vibrant beauty not only creates a stunning display, but they also serve as a wonderful source of food for bees, butterflies, ladybugs, hummingbirds, and other pollinators that help other plants grow. As if that wasn’t enough, you don’t need to invest a whole lot of effort into wildflowers. In fact, water and sunlight are all they need to flourish. In other words, wildflowers are a welcomed addition to any garden! If you’re thinking about incorporating wildflowers into your landscape, you might be under the impression that you can simply toss wildflower seeds onto the ground and they’ll grow. However, that’s a common misconception!

Can I Just Throw Down Wildflower Seeds?

While it’s true that wildflowers don’t require a whole lot of effort, in order for the seeds to take off, some preparations do need to be made. This is particularly true if you intend on planting them in a location where grass or other flora is already growing.

The reason? The wildflower seeds will have a hard time germinating and may not be able to access the water and sunlight that they need to grow. If there is no vegetation in the space where you plan on growing wildflowers, your chances of success may be a bit better if you simply toss the seeds onto the ground. However, if you really want to ensure their success, preparing the soil is highly recommended!

If you want your landscape to feature a colorful display of annual and perennial wildflowers, read on to find out what you can to do increase the chance of success.

Get the Timing Right

First and foremost, you should determine the best time to plant wildflower seeds in your region. Most wildflowers drop their seeds in the autumn so that they can make use of the moisture the extra moisture that will be on the ground during the winter months. If you live in a colder area, aim to scatter your wildflower seeds after the first frost. If you live in a warmer climate, you can wait until as late as January to sow the seeds.

Choose the Right Location

The vast majority of wildflower species prefer direct sunlight. With that said, choose a location that has access to full sun. Avoid planting the seeds underneath trees, shrubs, and other established plants, as well as any other shady locations.

Prep the Soil

As with seeds for all species of plants, wildflowers do best when they are planted in the right soil conditions. If the soil is compact, use a tiller or even a rake to loosen it. The seeds will have an easier time germinating. Plus, the roots will be able to grab a stronger hold, and the plants will have an easier time pushing through the soil if it’s loose. To further increase your chances of success, mixing in an organic fertilizer before sowing the seeds is strongly encouraged.

Evenly Distribute

Wildflowers don’t like to be crowded, so distributing the wildflower seeds evenly is very important. You can either try scattering smaller handfuls of wildflower seed mixes across a large area or mix some sand or soil into the seed before you toss them onto the ground.

Tap Down

Wildflower seeds don’t need to be planted in holes; however, they should be tapped down to encourage growth. After you’ve scattered them over the soil, use the back of a shovel, your hand, or your foot to gently press them into the ground.

Planting Wildflower Seeds

While there’s a chance that wildflower seeds will grow if you simply toss them on the ground, if you want to ensure a successful outcome, some preparation is advised. With the above-mentioned tips, your wildflower seeds should flourish!
