How thick should cedar be for raised bed? ›

Use lumber that's at least 2″ thick. Many beds are built of 2x6s, because a 6″ deep bed will grow nearly anything except carrots and parsnips. At Spotts, we use 2x8s because we like that extra depth. The easiest way to make a raised bed is just to screw some 2x6s together to make a square.

Cedar lumber is often used in constructing raised beds. It offers a natural resistance to rot and insects. Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is very rot resistant and will last for years even when in contact with soil. However, the wood is very dense and can be hard to work with.

We use better materials

You will not find other planters that use FSC and WRCLA certified Western Red Cedar. This a renewable resource and will last 30+ years that is completely climate and rot resistant.

The outside wood is much less of a concern, so sealing is mostly a cosmetic. If your planters are pressure treated wood you should be fine (sealed or not). Almost as good if you use cedar or other rot-resistant wood. You can seal around the drain holes.

The minimum required depth depends on the plant. But on average, a raised garden bed should accommodate about 20 inches of soil for the roots of flowers and vegetables.

Ideally beds should be at least 40cm deep, especially if they are built on paving or compacted soil. But you may want much deeper raised beds if you want to grow plants with deep roots, or to avoid bending down too much whilst gardening. If you buy a kit, you may want to get two, or even three tiers instead of one.

What should you not do in a greenhouse? ›

Add a mixture of compost and purchased topsoil in a 1:2 or 1:1 ratio, to the top of the bed. There are vendors who sell topsoil mixed with compost. Alternatively, fill the bed with compost and a soilless growing mix in a 1:1 ratio.

The fact is, landscape fabric is not a necessity if say, you want to control weeds because the confined space makes it easier to control weeds. But, you can use landscape fabric as a raised bed liner for other reasons, such as preventing soil erosion or improving the life of the raised bed itself.

A: Cutting out the sod underneath your beds, then laying landscape fabric down underneath your beds work best. The fabric will allow water to pass through, but will help prevent weeds. If you cannot dig up the grass, you can also tarp it for a few weeks or months first, and that will effectively bake the grass.

Cut Cedar Boards

Cut the second board into two 3-foot pieces and one 2-foot piece. We chose cedar because it is naturally rot-resistant, even when untreated. Pro Tip: Feel free to alter the measurements according to your needs, but to aid in function, we recommend two smaller raised beds rather than one larger one.

If cedar chips are installed at the ideal thickness of around 2 to 3 inches, they will form an effective insulative cover for your soil. This is especially important for your plants during the colder months.
