Chili-Garlic Onion Crunch-Trader Joe's Copycat Recipe - Beloved Plate (2024)

Appetizers

Trader Joes Copycat Chili-Onion Crunch is almost exactly like the store-bought version but with the addition of a very notable ingredient-crunchy garlic!!! I put my own personal spin on it. I absolutely love garlic in virtually any form so I added it to the mix and was truly inspired by the result. This particular recipe packs a bit of a punch..it's a little spicy!!! If you're sensitive to a little heat, you will definitely want to start off with 1tablespoon of red pepper flakes, then wait a few days before tasting to see if the flavor has intensified to your liking.

Something to note specifically about this recipe is the time needed, not the time you'll need to set aside to actually prepare this but what will be needed for the flavors to actually meld together. This is one of those things that gets better as it ages. I let mine sit for 2 whole weeks before I actually tasted it and was blown away!!! All you really need is a few days but you will find that this only gets better with time.

Ingredients

  • Olive oil-use a good quality olive oil-one that is used for dipping
  • Dried Minced Onion-adds a toasted onion flavor and creates part of the crunchy element
  • Dried Minced Garlic (optional)-adds an additional layer of flavor and more crunch
  • Red Pepper Flakes-dried, crushed red chili peppers that add the spice element to this chili oil
  • Chili Powder-blend of chili pepper and spices that adds deep, rich flavors
  • Sea Salt-less processed and comes from evaporated seawater
  • Smoked Paprika- adds a slightly smoky flavor

Process

The way to successfully create any chili oil in my opinion involves creating time for the flavors to marinate. While this chili onion crunch can be used right away, I highly recommend making it at least one day ahead.

  1. Make this at least a day before if you can
  2. Gently toast the minced onion and garlic and allow it to cool before combining it with the other ingredients
  3. Combine all ingredients in an airtight container and mix well with a spoon.

Why did you decide to make a Copycat Trader Joe’s Chili-Garlic Onion Crunch recipe?

Years ago when Trader Joe’s first released this condiment I was eager to try it like so many other people so I did, and it was great! My only issue was that I was using it so often and the amount that was offered was so small that I’d have to go out and buy more jars frequently. I decided to buy the ingredients individually to combine them for this oil so that I could make it over and over again at a much better price point.

For me, this meant that I could literally recreate four times the amount offered at the store for close to 50 percent of the price-it was definitely worth it!Additionally, I knew I could find most of the ingredients at my local farmer's market as I had seen nearly all of them before. Truth be told, the only thing I did not already have in my kitchen was dried minced garlic and dried minced onion. I had other forms of these two ingredients but they wouldn’t offer that desired “crunch.” This is how my version of the Trader Joe’s Chili Onion crunch dupe began.

How to use Chili-Garlic Onion Crunch

Chili oil is so incredibly versatile. It can be used in a variety of different dishes and recipes. Of course, chili oil is probably most known to be used when enjoying dumplings or Gyoza or as a dipping oil for breads. In my kitchen, I use this as one of those essential season-alls. I’ve used it in everything from lasagna to chili. One of my favorite ways to use this is on green beans or other vegetables. Additionally, it's extremely delicious when used on rice alongside some fresh herbs. The possibilities are limitless here as you can use this mixture to accompany a variety of different sauces, meats, soups, breads, and many other things. Imagine making a homemade pizza and stirring some of this into your pasta sauce as a way to elevate it to the next level.

How to store Chili-Garlic Onion Crunch

I’ve stored this chili oil for as long as 6 months but I’ve got a few tips for how to keep it fresh. The first tip is to keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. I store mine in a mason jar in the pantry away from my stove to keep condensation from forming. I would not recommend keeping it in the refrigerator as the olive oil will cool to a solid and the heavier ingredients will separate and sink to the bottom. The most important things to note are:

  • Always use a clean spoon to stir and scoop out the oil
  • Be sure to secure the lid on your container after use
  • Keep away from extreme hot or cold temperatures

What is the difference between this version and the Trader Joe's version?

The main difference Trader Joe's Chili Onion Crunch and this recipe is that it calls for the addition of dried minced garlic. I decided to add this because I love garlic so much. I’m not sure exactly how Trader Joe’s creates their version but based on my knowledge, I wanted to create a version that was as similar as possible. Also, the TJ’s version has dried red bell pepper which I wasn’t able to source but I figured if I used chili flakes and chili powder instead, this would be a fair substitute.

I love this recipe, but I changed it up a bit by using air fried sliced onion, red and green bell pepper, whole fresh garlic sliced and a couple jalapenos until they were partially blackened then blend it all in the nutribullet with the above recipe. This is a nummy thick garlic chili paste.

Yum! I am so excited to try this- the nearest TJ ‘s is over 45 minutes away from me, and I just can’t justify driving that far! We are visiting Madison, WI today from where we live in rural WI, and while I LOVE TJ’s corporate philosophies, I do not like their prices! Now I don’t have to reverse engineer the jar I bought- I can just use your recipe! ❤️
