Voice Type: Light-Lyric Soprano

Range: C#3-Bb5-Eb6-Eb7

Demi has one of those voices that is almost always misclassified. While most are mistaken for one or two wrongly attributed fachs, I have seen Demi labelled as many different voice types. A few include: lyric mezzo-soprano, spinto mezzo-soprano (which isn’t even a real fach) and spinto soprano. The one that seems to pop up the most is a full-lyric soprano, people cannot get there head around the fact that she isn't one (including me at one point so don't worry).

Mezzo-Soprano

People often believe Demi is a mezzo. They use her‘large’ voice and range to justify this classification. One of the most common mistakes people make is placing emphasis on one's range to classify the voice. Yes, she can hit a C#3, but that is not enough to make her a mezzo-soprano. The issue with using range is that technique can affect one’s range. For example, if a singer uses horrible technique to belt, they (usually) will not be able to go as high as they would with a good mix. There are also singers whose range covers multiple voice types- how would you classify those singers? Other factors need to be taken into account. In her range, Demi’s voice sits in the higher end, not the lower. The difference between a mezzo-soprano and soprano is where their voices lie. Demi’s material exposes her soprano tessitura, she is almost always belting F5 or above (Skyscraper, Heart Attack, Stone Cold, Confident, Sorry Not Sorry, etc). Her lows are very weak and she seems very uncomfortable there. Despite the flaws in her technique, she has natural comfort in the upper 5th octave. This is the give away that Demi is a soprano, not a mezzo.

Spinto

Many people think ‘Demi has a large voice (or output), she must be a spinto’. The truth is, it can be difficult to determine a pop singer’s output. In opera, there is no microphone to amplify one’s sound, and so a singer’s output is more obvious. Because modern singers use microphones to get more volume, their true output is distorted. Secondly, her technique, almost solely consists of her trying to create a bigger sound (chest-dominant mix and pushing). Demi manipulates her voice to seem bigger than it is. One must remember that fach is an operatic creation. Opera singers will use consistent and correct technique. If Demi were to use an even mix and stop pushing, her voice would not sound so‘big’. Besides a ‘big’ voice, a spinto will have different tonal characteristics to a lyric voice. A spinto will be dark, rich and metallic. Demi’s voice does not fit that description and is closer to the brightness and warmth of a lyric (Cool For The Summer).

Full-Lyric

For sopranos (which we have established Demi is), the lyric voice is broken down into two sub-categories; the light and full lyric. People often assume a full-lyric is any ‘big’ lyric voice. Like all other voice types, a full-lyric will have a specific timbre. A full-lyric’s voice will be womanly/mature and less bright than a light-lyric. Demi’s voice is definitely youthful and bright. Demi makes her voice seem larger with her technique, but her timbre matches that of a light-lyric.

Vocal View: Demi never fails to bring emotion to a song. She pours her heart out into each and every performance.
