Envision this: tomorrow you wake up with the sunrise, wash your face, you do some morning yoga stretches on the porch before brewing a cup of coffee and enjoying it while reading or journaling. Then, you make a green smoothie before heading off to the gym.
All that before settling down into whatever the rest of your day holds?! If that isn’t the most cleansing, peaceful, and productive morning ever, I don’t know what is.
Green smoothies are an incredible way to start your day. They are easy to digest, and offer the energy, fibre, vitamins, and minerals you need to give your body a cleansing boost. The benefits are vast and varied, depending on what you include of course, but overall green smoothies are a great addition to any morning routine.
Here’s one of my favourite “beginner” green smoothie recipes. I created this through a series of trial and error, trying to find a version that was packed with nutrients but still didn’t taste like it had a lot of veggies. If you try it out, let me know what you think (recipe below)!
Spinach and Avocado Smoothie
Yield: 1 mason jar
ingredients
1½ cups spinach (frozen preferred)
¼ zucchini
½ avocado
½ banana
¼ cup mango
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp maca root powder
1 tsp flax seed
1 tbsp. hemp seed
1 tbsp. nut butter
1 cup nut milk (almond milk is a great starting point)
½ cup water
instructions
Chop the vegetables and fruit, as applicable, depending on the power of your blender.
Combine the spinach and water and blend until well combined.
Add the zucchini, avocado, banana, mango, and nut milk, and blend again until smooth.
Add the nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, flax seed, hemp seed, and nut butter, and blend for a minute or so until the nut butter has been incorporated well.
Pour into a mason jar and enjoy (preferably with a metal straw).

notes
I recommend using frozen spinach, as this is a good way to get the nutrients of spinach without the flavour becoming overwhelming in the drink.
I like to ensure 1-2 of my fruits and/or vegetables are frozen. This ensures the smoothie comes out slightly chilled, rather than room temperature, which I find a lot more appetizing. However, adding too many frozen ingredients may result in a very cold smoothie, which can be a shock on your digestive system. 1-2 ingredients seems to be a happy medium!
All the spices are optional, however each of them have incredible benefits. Adding a little into your smoothie each day can help you reap some of these benefits, which include:
Maca root powder: energy, mood, and libido boosting
Cinnamon: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Turmeric: contains the active ingredient curcumin, which has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Nutmeg: supporting digestion, detoxification, and immunity, and reducing inflammation
What better way to reap the nutritional benefits of greens, spices, and seeds, than combining them in a smoothie?
