Halloween is almost here! Although the sweet treat holiday takes place well into the autumn season, the weather has been known to be wishy-washy.

Sometimes it snows and trick-or-treaters are forced to bundle up over their costumes or sometimes Mother Nature turns up the heat! As we put the final touches on our costumes and holiday decorations, let’s review Halloween’s weather history.

Taking it all the way back to 1933 and 1950, trick-or-treaters in La Crosse, Wis., were quite comfortable with warm temperatures reaching 70 F! However, tied for the coldest low temperature are the years 1873 and 1917 with a low of 18 F – brrr! However, trick-or-treating didn’t become a widespread practice until the 1930s. Thank goodness with that chill!

In the Ohio Valley, particularly Lexington, Kent., snow has fallen on Halloween before. In 1954, a trace of snow was recorded as trick-or-treaters traipsed across their neighborhoods. Further west in Paducah, Kent., a recent record cold high temperature of 46 F was noted in 2019! This also resulted in the second-coldest low temperature of a chilled 27 F.

2019 proved to be a cold Halloween for many in the U.S. Denver, Colo., broke their all-time coldest low-temperature record for Halloween with the mercury reaching down to 7 degrees Fahrenheit. SEVEN! The previous record was 10 F, set back in 1991.

Do you dream of a white… Halloween? Cleveland, Ohio must have in 1954! Just over 4 inches of snow fell onto the heads of trick-or-treaters across the city. More on the unusual side, Atlanta, Ga., recorded a trace of white stuff back in 1993! Atlanta’s normal Halloween high temperature is near 70 degrees. Imagine snow on that day!

On the warmer side, Greensboro, N.C., reached a toasty 85 F back in 1961. Wilmington, N.C., reached the same 85 F record warm temperature for Halloween more recently in 2004.

Much further south in Tampa, Fla., 1993 was a record-breaking year for cold – yes, cold – weather in Florida. The Halloween low temperature got down to 38 F! The usual trick-or-treat weather in Florida averages out to be in the upper 70s and low 80s.
