Here’s what else to consider
Diversity is more than just a buzzword in the workplace. It is a value that reflects the richness of human experiences, perspectives, and identities. Diversity can enhance creativity, innovation, and problem-solving, as well as foster a more inclusive and respectful culture. However, diversity alone is not enough. You also need to show cultural competency, which is the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with people from different backgrounds, cultures, and worldviews. Cultural competency is a skill that you can develop and demonstrate in the workplace, especially when you are applying for a job, working on a project, or leading a team. Here are some ways you can show your commitment to diversity and cultural competency in the workplace.

1 Educate yourself
One of the first steps to demonstrate your commitment to diversity is to educate yourself about the different dimensions of diversity, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, and more. You can read books, articles, podcasts, or blogs that explore the experiences and perspectives of diverse groups. You can also take online courses, workshops, or webinars that teach you about cultural awareness, sensitivity, and communication. By educating yourself, you can expand your knowledge, challenge your assumptions, and avoid stereotypes and biases.

When I'm asked to participate on a conference panel discussion on cybersecurity I'm conscious of the fact that women and minorities are under represented in IT and infosec. When possible I will reach out to include professionals in my network to join me so that we all benefit from their diverse perspective and experience.

To be culturally competent you must be observant. More often than not, people who feel uncomfortable in workplace situations don't speak up for fear of disturbing the peace. Look for non-verbal cues, and if you notice someone's discomfort, do what you can to steer that conversation in the other direction. Of course sticking up for others and being assertive certainly has its time and place, but I've found that in many of these situations the person who is uncomfortable would not appreciate a confrontation on their behalf. Focus on expressing inclusivity in a positive manner rather than looking for and calling out incompetencies. That being said, it's still very important to not be complacent around intolerant behavior. Communication is key!

This strategy is very active and beneficial to multiple people. Even when opinions are in conflict, we better understand the world when these perspectives are shared. Creating a brave space is necessary for all individuals involved to be able to share openly and in a way that enriches the experience of the team and it's purpose.

In addition, one must learn to have an open mind to learn about the cultures of other team members. This does not necessarily mean they must agree to all their practices but showing an interest in other people leads to further understanding. It makes collaboration in teams easier when they can perceive a certain level of empathy among themselves.

Be aware of your unconscious bias, so don't "shoot from the hip" response as it can lead to trouble. Think what you have learned and apply it to your work and demeanor. It will make life a lot easier for you. Continue to reflect and see how your words can be inclusive towards everyone. You don't want to alienate potential business. It's just good business to have a DEI mindset.

Living in New York City brings unique opportunities to celebrate diversity and we enjoy a shared space and identity that is (largely) tolerant and inclusive. Not every single one of our 8+ million population lives in _complete_ harmony every hour of every day, but we certainly don't shy away from the fact the the entire spectrum of humanity is on display here for everyone to see and (hopefully) admire and respect.
