Starfield Failed To Create Save Fixes You Can Try
Allowing to save the game at different points in the game is important in RPGs. It allows players to load saves if they don’t like the outcome of the conversations or scenarios in the game. Starfield is an RPG and allows players to create as many save files as they want but the “failed to create save game” error is not letting them. There are multiple reasons why the game is unable to create a save file and the following are the fixes that will help players resolve it.
Disable OneDrive Sync
Starfield creates a folder in the Documents where save files are stored. If you have enabled OneDrive on your PC, the Documents folder is automatically synced to OneDrive. This OneDrive sync causes the “failed to create save game” error as the path to the Documents folder changes. Players can fix the Save file not creating error in Starfield by quitting the game, right-clicking the OneDrive icon in the Taskbar > Settings > Sync and Backup > Manage Backup > Turn off backup for Documents folder > click “Save Changes”. Launch Starfield, save your progress, and the game will create a save file.
In this case, disabling the OneDrive backup doesn’t fix the “failed to create save game” error, go to Documents > MyGames and delete the Starfield folder. Run the game, save your progress, and the game will create a new save.
Change User Folder Path
The first fix I noted is to disable the OneDrive backup or sync for your Documents folder. Interstingly, the Failed to Crate Save Game error is also bothering Starfield players who don’t have OneDrive or have deleted it. The reason you are still experiencing the Save Game error is that OneDrive changes the paths to user folders like Documents and doesn’t change them back when OneDrive is deleted or disabled.
To fix the “failed to create save game” error, players must change the paths to the user folders back to their defaults using the Windows Registry Editor tool.
- Press the Windows + R buttons
- Type regedit and press Enter
- Windows Registry Editor will open up.
- Navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders” path.
- You will find the path to the Documents Folder is “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents”.
- Right-click the file that has the “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents” path
- click on Modify
- Change the path to C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents and press Ok
- Do it for every file that has OneDrive in its path.
After that, navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders” path in Registry Editor. Find the file named “Personal” and the path to the Documents folder will again be “C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Documents”. Modify the path to “C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents” and press OK. Launch Starfield, play the game and then save your progress.
Disable Controlled Folder Access
Windows operating system comes with built-in security features that can interfere with the game or block the game from accessing certain files and folders. Controlled Folder Access is one such security feature and the reason for Starfield not saving your progress issue. Disabling Controlled Folder Access fixes the “failed to create save game” error.
- Open Windows Settings
- Go to Privacy & Security > Windows Security
- Open Virus & Threat Protection
- Click Manage Ransomware protection
- Turn off controlled folder access
- Launch Starfield, save your progress and the game will successfully create a save file.
Run The Game As An Administrator
Starfield not having administrative rights is another reason why it’s not creating your save file. Running the game as an administrator will fix the issue. Right-click Starfield in Steam library > Manage > Browse Local files. A new Explorer window will open containing the game files. Right-click the executable > properties > Compatibility tab > check “Run this program as an administrator” and apply.
