Keith Haring, le Speedy Graphito New-yorkais | (1)La fresque murale de l’artiste Keith Haring, Crack Is Wack au Crack Is Wack Playground, 128th Street et Second Avenue, Harlem, illustre la puissance de son art public spontané et non autorisé. Cette œuvre a été réalisée en une seule journée en 1986 avec l’autorisation des autorités des parcs de New York, mais seulement après qu’une œuvre antérieure de l’artiste ait conduit à son arrestation. La campagne populaire de soutien à l’artiste, stimulée par les principaux journaux et les autorités municipales, a abouti à une réduction des frais et à une invitation à créer une version permanente de la fresque murale. Il est inspiré par son assistant de studio, Benny, qui était accro à la drogue. [L’œuvre a été restaurée en 2019.]

Étudiant en art, Keith Haring arrive dans le berceau du mouvement graffiti maintenant vieux de plus de dix ans, à New York en 1978, et s’habitue à une énergie nouvelle et frénétique : la scène artistique du graffiti.

Influencé par cet « art du métro », Haring trace son propre chemin dans la scène et commence à dessiner illégalement à la craie blanche sur des panneaux publicitaires noirs vides dans les stations de métro.

La dernière exposition parisienne d’œuvres en intérieur de l’artiste, « The Political Line », est répartie entre deux lieux : le Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris et le Centquatre.

Le langage visuel de Keith Haring comprend un grand nombre de figures dansantes, de cœurs, d’anges, de pyramides, d’ovnis, de symboles entrés dans le lexique occidental commun.

L’artiste français Speedy Graphito, un street artiste parisien de première génération, peint d’une manière étonnamment similaire. Speedy est souvent appelé le French Haring, de la même manière qu’un autre artiste de rue parisien de première génération, Jef Aérosol, est appelé le French Banksy.

Mais la rencontre entre l’œuvre de Jef Aérosol et celle de Banksy est superficielle, c’est-à-dire qu’ils peignent chacun à la bombe et au pochoir et qu’ils sont musiciens. Speedy et Haring ont d’ailleurs peint ensemble un mur en 1985 pour une discothèque parisienne, lieu de rencontre à l’époque. Le travail de Speedy partage des codes stylistiques et thématiques similaires à ceux de Haring.
