New Star Trek Film: Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley Take the Helm! (2025)

Hold onto your phasers, Trekkies! A brand-new Star Trek film is on the horizon, and it's bringing some fresh faces to the bridge. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the dynamic duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming, are set to write and direct this exciting new venture, as reported by Variety on November 15, 2025. But here's where it gets interesting...

This isn't just another sequel. According to Variety's sources, this Star Trek film will boldly go where no Star Trek film has gone before (at least in recent memory): it won't be a continuation of J.J. Abrams' reboot series. That means no Chris Pine, no familiar faces from those movies.

While the plot remains a closely guarded secret, the project is completely separate from any existing or previously planned television series or movie developments. This offers a clean slate, a chance for a new vision of the final frontier.

The path to this new film has been anything but smooth. Since Star Trek Beyond launched in 2016, the franchise has faced a series of setbacks.

  • Chris Hemsworth was almost set to reprise his role as Captain Kirk's father from the 2009 Star Trek film, despite his character's apparent demise.
  • Quentin Tarantino nearly took the helm, envisioning a Star Trek movie set in a 1930s gangster world.
  • Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman each came close to directing, even to the point of set construction, before moving on to other projects. Hawley is now working on FX's Alien: Earth, and Shakman is involved with Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Daley and Goldstein have a proven track record, having directed the comedy Game Night and the Vacation reboot. Their writing credits also include Horrible Bosses and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.

What do you think? Are you excited about a Star Trek film with a fresh cast and a new direction? Do you think it's a good idea to move away from the established reboot, or would you have preferred a continuation? Share your thoughts in the comments!
