My mom came to visit this week from Florida! This was her first time in Columbia, so we wanted to make sure she was as comfortable as possible. She’s, um, not quite accustomed to the cold, so Kyle and I figured some warm co*cktails would go a long way. She isn’t a big fan of whiskey or vodka (like mother like daughter!), so we bought a couple bottles of red wine and cider-friendly spices to make our favorite mulled wine instead. Keep reading for the homemade gluten-free/paleo mulled wine recipe!

As much as I love mulled wine, it’s a recipe for acid reflux for me. Red wine is one of the biggest culprits of my heartburn, along with citrus, sweets, and pretty much everything I love to eat at holiday gatherings. I hate putting a damper on holiday fun, especially now that we live thousands of miles away and family time is precious, so I’ve been taking the all-new Basic Care Omeprazole Orally Disintegrating Tablet (also referred to as ODT) in anticipation of potential flare-ups. I take one dose a day, every day, for 14 days, and as long as I take the medication properly, I’m completely protected for 24 hours*.

Basic Care Omeprazole ODT is available on Amazon, which is a huge convenience, and the orally disintegrating tablet literally melts in my mouth with no water needed. If you’ve ever experienced heartburn, you know swallowing pills can be super taxing, so the orally disintegrating tablet has been a game-changer.

Now, on to our go-to mulled wine recipe, which has been adapted from Danielle Walker’s Against All Grain Celebrations cookbook! Per her expertise, I’ve replaced regular sugar with coconut sugar, making this a gluten-free and paleo option for anyone with dietary restrictions. Kyle absolutely loves it– he calls it the best mulled wine he’s ever had.

Gluten-Free Mulled Wine Recipe

This paleo and gluten-free mulled wine recipe is super easy, y’all. If you sliced and halved the oranges 8 ways, you’ll have 32 pieces. Press a whole clove into the peel of each half orange slice and set aside.

Pour the wine into a large pot set on simmer. Stir in the coconut sugar and dash of salt until completely dissolved. Then, gather your cider-friendly spices in a bundle of sorts. You can either place the spice bundle in the wine directly and use a fine mesh strainer to remove any solids *or* you can use a piece of cheesecloth or a strainer to steep.

Lastly, add in the orange slices and steep for at least one hour to allow the wine to mull.

After one hour of simmering, ladle the wine into mugs. Serve warm! Garnish with star anise, allspice berries, and orange slices. Just a reminder that this recipe, which has been adapted from Danielle Walker’s amazing Against All Grain Celebrationscookbook, is gluten-free, dairy-free, and paleo!

I wish my mama could’ve stayed longer! Kyle and I aren’t going home for Christmas this year, so it was really special to get to spend time with her beforehand. I’m hoping maybe the promise of more mulled wine will lure her up to Missouri again sometime soon!
