Paul Alexander tributes as hundreds attend Huddersfield funeral (2024)

Hundreds of people gathered today to pay their respects to a 'kind and compassionate' Huddersfield man who died in tragic circ*mstances.

One mourner estimated that around 1,000 people attended Paul Alexander's funeral held today (Friday) at Christ Church in Woodhouse Hill, Huddersfield.

Paul, who died aged 56 and was known to many as 'P', was remembered as a 'legend of Brackenhall' earlier this year when friends set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money towards his funeral. More than 400 people contributed to the online fund, raising almost £7,000.

Today Sean Morgan, a family friend, told YorkshireLive that Christ Church had been full, with many more people standing outside. He estimated that around 1,000 people had attended. He said the funeral ceremony had been a celebration of Paul's life. Sean said that Paul had become a friend and had welcomed him when he first arrived in Huddersfield.

"Everybody in Brackenhall had a story that involved him. There was genuine love for him. He wasn't judgemental. He was caring and compassionate." Sean said the funeral was a worthy send-off for his friend. "Everybody has come together. The mood was buoyant and vibrant to give him a send-off. Everybody is extremely sad, but the mood was a celebration of Paul's life."

Hundreds of people took part in the search for Paul when he went missing earlier this year. Tragically, his body was found in the Huddersfield Broad Canal on Wednesday, February 14, following searches by local people and police officers. At the time, Paul was described as being 'at the heart of the community' as everyone knew him and loved him.
