Keep the soil evenly moist during the summer growing season, but allow some drying to occur in between thorough waterings. Avoid soggy conditions at all times, as this could lead to root rot. On the other hand, excessive dryness will result in yellow leaves and foliage loss. There is a happy middle ground to maintain.

A plumeria should be watered frequently, at least once a week, when it is in bloom. Before watering your Plumeria, check the top soil for moisture. If dry, then water the plant. Without enough water, Plumeria tend to go into dormancy or even abort flower stalks.

Pot size: Plumeria need to be planted in pots optimal to supporting their growth. Planting in a pot too small doesn't allow for the roots to have ample room to grow. Too small and too light of a pot could also cause the “top-heavy” plant to easily topple over on a windy or stormy day.

The magnesium in Epson salts is essential in the formation of chlorophyll. It should be used monthly as it benefits the roots and flowers. Epsom salts also helps prevent sunburned leaves on hot summer days.

In coastal regions, Plumerias can be placed in the direct sun without harm. For inland areas, plants should be placed in a partially protection location. A little shade will protect foliage and stems from becoming scorched and will also prevent sun scalding on the stems. Plumerias can survive with little moisture.

We use a 6-20-20 for our early season fertilizing. If you have only small plants or just a few, regardless of container size, just plain old MiracleGro works just fine.

It is caused by the fungus Coleosporium plumeriae. Plumeria rust affects the foliage of the plant but not the stems or flowers. Its spores are airborne or spread from plant to plant from the backsplash of rain or watering.

It also needs bright, all day sun. If it is outside, it should be in a sheltered spot, with reflected sunshine and heat a bonus. In your zone, it should be brought inside, best in a greenhouse, for the winter. Plumerias produce a bloom hormone before sending seed to branch ends for flowers.

Thrives well in moderate humidity levels. If this plant is planted in a dry climate, provide misting to the foliage but not to the flowers. Add a water source nearby or a tray of wet pebbles to create humidity.

Add some coffee ground, a circle round the main root once every 3-4 weeks. Or banana peel water 2-3 times a week max. (leave a banana peel in water for 2-3 days) for nutrtional value.

Experience has shown that Plumeria need ample root room while actively growing. Those grown in open ground always perform and bloom better than those held captive in small pots. A general rule of thumb is to allow 1 gallon pot size for each foot of plumeria branch / trunk length.

As soon as your plumeria shows signs of spring growth, begin fertilizing. Encourage flower bud formation by using a high phosphorous fertilizer, such as Grow More Hawaiian Bud & Bloom, and apply it every 2-3 weeks through August. Plumeria flower mid-summer to fall.

Prime time for plumeria pruning is in spring, before new blooms emerge. This is the best way to encourage plumeria branching, as two or three new branches will emerge from each cut. Prune the plumeria a couple of inches (5 cm.) above the junction of two branches.

Many varieties of plumeria have an intoxicating scent, especially at night. Drawn in by the enticing fragrance, sphinx moths, their natural pollinators, are frequent nighttime visitors. During the day, plumeria attract butterflies, bees and a fast-growing fan base of enthusiasts.

In most cases, an all-purpose, 11-11-13 fertilizer with micronutrients will provide the nutrients all plumeria need for healthy growth. If a soil test reveals certain nutrient deficiencies, or if you want to tailor your fertilizer to the needs of particular plumeria, you can select a special formulation.

There are many examples of plumerias that are decades or a century old, so at least that long.

Although plumeria trees are tropical plants, growing them in other climates is possible under the right conditions: Choose your planting area: Your plumeria will require full sun or partial shade in your garden.

Plumerias won't bloom at all until they are at least two or three years old. Once they're old enough, they'll produce clusters of blooms from spring through fall. Note: Marshall Grain only carries plants that are old enough to give you the enjoyment of their profuse and fragrant flowers.

Cactus Mix is a great option for those starting out. It can be purchased at most stores and is readily available. If it doesn't seem to drain well enough, add a little perlite to the mix. Another option would be to use a mix of ½ perlite to ½ potting soil or ½ sphagnum peat moss.

Over watering your soil causes your soil to be waterlogged, not a healthy environment for plumeria to live. Much like we would not be comfortable living under water all the time. We need to come up for air and the plumeria roots need oxygen too.

But the plants don't really need these things; they will survive the entire winter without water or any other care. Plumeria must, however, be protected from freezes if they are to survive and bloom in the spring. Frostbite hits the newest growth tips of the plant where the flower stalks for next year will appear.

Plumerias can be slow to bloom as they have to mature and develop a bloom hormone at the various branch tips. And some varieties just bloom better than others. Meanwhile, a minimum of six hours of sun, water (avoid sogginess) and monthly applications (April to September) of a high-phosphorus fertilizer should help.

This plant will do well outside on the southeast side of the home to avoid afternoon heat. Give at least 6 hours of morning sun per day to promote plenty of flowers. Let the outdoor soil dry between waterings through the growing season between March and September.
