Though white chocolate can be a polarizing topic, there’s no denying this extra creamy version of hot cocoa. Ree's secret ingredient? Half-and-half! It is mixed withmilk, white chocolate chips, vanilla extract, and a pinch of saltto make a smooth, decadent and cozy treat that’s practically begging for marshmallows. Even those who identify with Team Dark Chocolate won’t be able to resist. The best part? From start to finish, it takes 15 minutes or less. It’s the perfect non-alcoholic and festive drink to serve around the holidays.
What is white hot chocolate made of?
It varies recipe to recipe, but for this version, Ree heats milk with half-and-half on the stovetop, then stirs in white chocolate chips until melted. Vanilla and salt are added at the end to add richness. Other recipes may call for chopped white chocolate.
Is white chocolate real chocolate?
Chocolate purists will be quick to point out that no, technically white chocolate isn’t considered chocolate. While it does contain cocoa butter (which comes from cocoa beans), it doesn't actually contain any chocolate solids and relies on sugar, lecithin, milk solids, and vanilla. Just like with Ree’s classic hot chocolate recipe, you can adapt this recipe to your own tastes. For a fruity spin, add orange rind to infuse the milk and half-and-half mixture or stir in some raspberry syrup just before serving.
