In short, Katherine feels out of place in her society. Due to her intelligence and independence, she is unwilling to play the role of the maiden daughter. She clearly abhors society's expectations that she obey her father and show grace and courtesy toward her suitors.

At the end of the play, Kate gives a monologue, or a speech to other characters (in this case, to other women) about how they must be more submissive to their husbands, whom she compares to kings.

The main themes of "The Taming of the Shrew" are gender roles and the supposed submissiveness of women. This can be clearly seen in Act IV, when Petruchio breaks Katharina's spirit. At the end of the act, she has become so submissive she identifies the sun as the moon because she is told to do so.

1. “Beetle-headed flap-ear'd knave,” from The Taming of the Shrew Act 4, Scene 1. In The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio tells Katharina that the servant is a “beetle-headed flap-ear'd knave,” basically a blockheaded lackey with big ears.

In Elizabethan England, shrew was widely used to refer to women and wives who did not fit into the social role that was expected of them. In William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Katherina "has a scolding, shrewish tongue," thus prompting Petruchio to try to tame her.

The counterargument is that Petruchio develops love for Katharine and tames her because he sees her shrewishness as a condition that she cannot cure on her own. Another interpretation is that Petruchio likes Katharine for her strong, challenging personality and takes on taming her as a fun challenge.

By the end of the play, Katherine falls in love with Petruchio. Katherine's change is meant to be more than just a development of romantic feelings, however; she comes to accept Petruchio's dominance over her.

At his home, he embarks on a plan to “tame” Katherine as one would tame a wild hawk. Starved and kept without sleep, Katherine eventually agrees with everything Petruchio says, however absurd. He takes her back to Padua, where they attend Bianca's wedding.

Katherina is the only one of the three who comes, winning the wager for Petruchio. She then hauls the other two wives into the room, giving a speech on why wives should always obey their husbands. The play ends with Baptista, Hortensio and Lucentio marvelling at how successfully Petruchio has tamed the shrew.

Is Petruchio a villain? ›

Petruchio is just about the most unlikeable character, without being a villain, in Shakespeare. He is boastful and selfish. On the face of it, he is an uncaring, cruel, chauvinistic, domineering, greedy man who treats marriage as a power trip.

In fact, in the last line of the play, Lucentio implies that Kate, in the end, allowed herself to be tamed: “'Tis a wonder, by your leave, she will be tamed so” (5.2. 193 ). Perhaps Lucentio implies that Kate and Petruchio planned the wager, and that they worked as a team to dupe the others out of their money.

There is dramatic irony in the fact that Baptista agrees to marry Bianca to 'Lucentio', commenting that the young people seem to be very much in love, 'Or both dissemble deeply their affections' (line 41). He unwittingly speaks the truth, having been completely taken in by the wily youngsters.

Then Petruchio distracts Kate from her food by bringing in a tailor and a hat-maker who have been designing new clothes for Kate to wear on a trip back to Baptista's house. Kate loves the hat and clothes, but Petruchio hates them both and sends the men away.

Back in Petruchio's house, Kate has had little food or sleep for several days now, and she entreats Grumio to get her something to eat. He refuses, and, like his master, claims that they are depriving her for her own benefit.

In fact, in the last line of the play, Lucentio implies that Kate, in the end, allowed herself to be tamed: “'Tis a wonder, by your leave, she will be tamed so” (5.2. 193 ).
