Let’s assume from the outset that you already own an electric toothbrush. It’s one of the must-have modern items. If you don’t, you and your gnashers really need to get with the times. Because seriously: Who has the energy to actually move a brush up and down, back and forth with their own hand? We're not cavemen anymore, guys.

That’s not to mention the huge benefits of using an electric toothbrush. Recent studies confirm that people who use electric toothbrushes have healthier gums and less tooth decay. That's especially true with electric toothbrushes that have “oscillating” heads, which rotate in both directions and sweep away even more plaque.

If you do already own an electric toothbrush, you'll know that these devices have come an awfully long way. Modern electric toothbrushes have multiple cleaning modes, Bluetooth connectivity, pressure sensors, and much more. Which makes upgrading to a new one even harder. To help you out, here’s some information to brush up on.

What makes a good electric toothbrush?

We can get really detailed but there are some very basic things to look out for:

  • Action There are different types of toothbrushes that provide different movements, such as oscillating (rotates in one direction and back again), pulsing (moving backwards and forwards against teeth), and rotating (bristles that actually turn).

  • Battery life Thankfully, most electric toothbrushes come with a charging base, though some are powered by regular batteries (that all depends on how fancy the toothbrush is). But still check battery times. A few weeks’ worth of power is good.

  • Replacement heads — The head of your toothbrush will need replacing. That’s just a dentist-endorsed fact of life. Some toothbrushes come with a few heads, which is helpful. If not, look out for models that have readily available replacement heads.

Keep these things in mind when shopping around for a new model.

How often should you change your toothbrush head?

General advice is to change every three months, though the more specific rule says when the bristles are worn down. Some brush heads have bristles that change colour to let you know when it’s time to replace the head. While brands like Oral-B and Philips offer lots of different toothbrush models, the heads are one-size-fits-all.

What are the most important electric toothbrush features?

As well as the basics, there are lots of more specialised features to consider. Here are some that are worth knowing about:

  • App connectivity — The most advanced toothbrushes will connect to an app via your smartphone, giving real-time feedback and advice on your brushing. These toothbrushes may also have AI that adapts to your bushing style.

  • Pressure sensor — Pressure sensors will alert you if you’re pressing too hard, which can lead to damage to your gums and tooth enamel. Oral-B includes this feature in its SmartRing, which lights up to warn you if you’re brushing too hard.

  • Two-minute timer — Exactly as it sounds, this alerts you when you’ve cleaned for the recommended two minutes. Some timers also pause every 30 seconds, helping you clean each “quadrant” of your mouth equally.

Keep an eye out for these features when shopping around for your next brush.

What is the best electric toothbrush?

There is a wide range of top-quality electric toothbrushes currently on the market, from some of the biggest names in technology and personal care. We have worked our way through this selection to bring you the very best devices from some top brands, so that you can upgrade to the toothbrush that is perfect for you.

These are the best electric toothbrushes for 2024.

Best For Sensitive Gums

The best electric toothbrushes for upping your oral hygiene game (12)

The Oral-B Genius 8000 is one of the best electric toothbrushes from the immensely popular brand. Which is saying something, because Oral-B is the go-to name in electric toothbrushes. It uses an intuitive crossaction brushing system that helps you brush like your dentist recommends, with clever position detection technology that covers all areas of your mouth.

Oral-B boasts that the Genius 8000 will remove up to 100% more plaque than a manual toothbrush. It also has a SmartRing and pressure control tech to protect delicate gums. This reduces the speed and alerts you whenever you brush too hard. Perfect if you suffer from gum sensitivity.

The Oral-B Genius 8000 is versatile too, with five brushing modes — daily clean, pro clean, sensitive, whitening and gum care. It also connects to the Oral-B app to give you real-time feedback on your brushing technique.

Mitimi Electric Toothbrush

Best For Tight Budgets

The best electric toothbrushes for upping your oral hygiene game (15)

The Mitimi electric toothbrush offers fantastic value for money, with a precision rotating cleaning system that delivers 40,000 vibrations per minute. This effectively removes up to 12 times more plaque than a manual toothbrush.

You have the choice of five brushing modes — whitening, cleaning, sensitive, polish, or massage. There's also a two-minute smart timer, which pauses every 30 seconds to remind you when to move onto the next quadrant of your mouth.

It only takes around four hours to charge, which then gives you 21 days' worth of power. That's a really impressive battery life for such a cheap device.

The actual bristles boast another nice feature: They change colour over time, which reminds you when it’s time to replace the head. Don’t worry, you get five bonus heads included. That's more than enough to keep you going.

Oral-B iO Series 10

Best For Smart Features

£799.97 Amazon

The best electric toothbrushes for upping your oral hygiene game (18)

When it comes to super-smart Oral-B toothbrushes, the Oral-B iO Series 10 is the best of the best. It has everything: An iOSense smart charger, 3D analysis, and magnet-driven micro vibrations. That sounds like a lot of jargon, but it's really quite simple: The iO Series 10 is very good for your teeth indeed.

The iOSense smart charger gives you real-time guidance on how, when and where you brush, covering six zones. It does this with AI 3D teeth tracking, which monitors brushing across the front, top, and back of your teeth.

The actual brushing is powered by a magnetic drive system, which channels the cleaning power to the point of every individual bristle. It creates micro-vibrations, which are gentle but bolster plaque removal. On that note, it also has magnetic charging — not to mention a charging travel case.

SURI Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush

Best For Sustainability

£95 Amazon

The best electric toothbrushes for upping your oral hygiene game (21)

What sets this SURI electric toothbrush apart from the competition is its sustainability. The recyclable plant-based head and bristles are made from cornstarch and castor oil, and SURI recycle them for free when they need replacing. That's great, but you still need an electric toothbrush to deliver when it comes to performance. Fortunately, SURI offers the best of both worlds.

SURI's MicraSonic magnetic motor is much smaller than standard electric toothbrushes but delivers 33,000 plaque lifting vibrations per minute in a durable matte aluminium body. This body is even repairable, so this really could be the last toothbrush you ever purchase.

The self-cleaning travel case is a nice touch, and the 40+ day battery life is really impressive. You also get a three-hour fast charge in the charging stand or travel case via USB C, so when you do eventually run out of juice, you don't need to wait long for your next clean.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige

Best For Plaque

The Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige is one of the best models from Philips’ hi-tech DiamondClean toothbrush range. It includes upgraded intensity levels, a built-in pressure sensor, and brush head replacement reminders. It also syncs with Sonicare, an AI-powered app, which tracks progress and sends reports that you can access on your smart device.

The real power of this toothbrush is the SenseIQ technology, which senses pressure, motion, coverage, duration and frequency up to 100 times per second. This helps the DiamondClean 9000 learn and adapt to your brushing style. And with 62,000 bristle movements per minute, it removes 20 times more plaque by gently pulsing fluid between the teeth and gum line.

In addition to all that (as if you needed more), there are five cleaning modes — which can be personalised via the app — plus two weeks’ worth of battery life.

Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300

Best For Reminders

£129.99 Amazon

The best electric toothbrushes for upping your oral hygiene game (27)

Not every Philips toothbrush costs the same as a gold set of gnashers. The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 is less expensive, but still effective.

It uses the brand's sonic technology to drive fluid deep between teeth to shift plaque both between teeth and along your gum line. This helps remove up to seven times more plaque than a manual toothbrush. It's a powerful device that it actually proved a little too much for some reviewers. But don't fear: A pressure sensor lets you know if you are brushing too hard.

It also uses something called BrushSync technology, a smart microchip-enabled feature that detects and synchronises the brush head with the handle. BrushSync has an alert system that tells you when it's time to replace your brush head. Overall, a smart toothbrush for a more affordable price.
