Nickelodeon Is Ready For Clue Hunting

Upcoming Blue's Clues & You! Episode Reunites Beloved Hosts (2)

Blue’s Clues premiered on Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. block in 1996. The show starred Steve, with the help of You the audience, as he followed his puppy Blue’s pawprints to figure out her plans for the day. The show was produced by Angela C. Santomero, Todd Kessler, and Traci Paige Johnson. The show had influences from programs such as Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street, with an intent to educate its young audience rather than simply entertain them. Part of this was to simply pause, and allow the audience to get involved and point out where the clues were to Steve (or Joe, or Josh). Johnson commented on the effectiveness of the show’s direction, and how what seemed unnecessary for adult viewers meant everything to children.

“It’s funny how, if you wait just that half a beat longer, you’ll usually get your answer … and just how imperative that was. If (parents) didn’t watch it with a kid, they’d say, ‘Oh, that’s too slow.’ But if they watched it with a kid, ‘Oh, I get it, I get it.”’

Upon its premiere, Blue’s Clues was the highest-rated show for preschoolers on commercial television. It was the third-highest rated show, just behind public television giants Barney & Friends and Arthur. Blue’s Clues ended its six-season fun in 2006, but the blue puppy wouldn’t be gone for long. Blue’s Clues & You! premiered on November 2019 with praise from both parents and old fans alike. Following its old format, Blue leaves clues for her new owner Josh to find around the house. The show is currently on its fourth season, with a fifth season already greenlit.
