What is the greatest love song written in the 20th century and why?
Daniel Lillford, Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, Canada
- "Lick My Love Pump" by Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, for obvious reasons.
Becky Parton, Dallas, GA U.S.
- Of course, this is a subjective question with a subjective answer, but Frank Sinatra did once say that The Beatles' 'Something' was 'the greatest love song of the last fifty years'. Then again, he also said it was his favourite Lennon/McCartney tune (when of course it was written by George Harrison).Personally, My favourite love song of the past century has to be 'My Funny Valentine' by Rodgers and Hart - sharp wit and genuine warmth all in one package. Brilliant.
Max Wurr, Stanmore United Kingdom
- "Lay,Lady,Lay" By Bob Dylan. It's guaranteed to melt the heart of any woman, closely followed by his "If you see her, say hello" from "Blood on the tracks" Absolute classics!
Graham Rickards, Waterlooville England
- Lili Marlene. No other song so clearly summed up love, loss, and hope.Is it any wonder that opposing armies sang it with the same fervor during WWII?
Robert del Valle, Detroit USA
- It has to be "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" written by Ewan McColl for his, then, wife Peggy Seeger. Roberta Flack made a decent cover which brought the song to prominence, but I prefer the original. It has a beautiful, haunting melody and stunning, if simple, words. I requested it for my (then girlfriend, now wife) at Essex University Folk Club in 1974 when Peggy Seeger and Ewan McColl were the main act, so in a very real sense it has always been "our" song.
Patrick rRussell, Ealing, UK
- "You Are My Sunshine" cuts through all the crap and says what it means so naively. I can't hear it without filling up, even when Seven of Nine off Voyager sang it...
David Logan, Newport, UK
- Loch Lomond is the best due to its melody, stunning settings and romantic lyrics.
Cao Tien Quan, Quynh Giang, Quynh Luu, Nghe An, Vietnam
