Love is the greatest thing for humanity and sometimes we need a little reminder not to give up on loving those who are important to us despite the challenges we may be facing. Here are a couple of songs to help out with that.
1. Calum Scott – You Are The Reason
The song describes how every relationship has difficult times but you stay in it because the love you feel for each other overrides everything else. It is about relationships that have the power to make us not give up and continue fighting for it.
In an interview with Capitol Records, Calum started writing the song from a place of anxiety and not knowing the cause of it but as he carried on writing he realized how every relationship has difficult times but you stick with it because of the love you have. He wrote it to say thank you to the special people who make his life better simply because they are in it.
2. James Arthur – Say You won’t Let Go
The lyrics in the song talk about falling in love at first sight and wanting to live forever with someone. He sings about loving her when she is young and still wanting to be with her when she is old and grey as long as she won’t also give up on their love. He also expresses the desire to be with her after they both die.
James Arthur stated that the inspiration was to look at someone’s life and the path through it with a partner. He drew inspiration from both personal experiences and from people around him as well as imagining what life is like in other people’s relationships.
3. Hailee Steinfeld – Rock Bottom
Here we see two people who really shouldn’t be together and even though their relationship is at rock bottom, they are unable to let go and move on. “Rock bottom” is a term to mean the lowest someone can get where they have nothing to lose.
Speaking about the song, Hailee had this to say: To me, it really represents that sort of absolute rollercoaster any relationship can be, and it’s where you love someone so much. That same person you love so much drives you absolutely insane, but you let them because you love them.
4. Selena Gomez – Back To You
This is an upbeat love ballad that talks about love for a significant other with whom they are apart but would go back to them at any chance they get. The chorus of the track is in reference to Selena Gomez’ relationship with Justin Bieber and The Weeknd. She dated Justin from 2010 to 2012 and started dating The Weeknd in January 2017. However, in October 2017 she was spotted hanging out with Justin and this led her to break up with The Weeknd two weeks later to get back with Justin.
The song is part of the album Rare which was released in 2020.
5. DJ Snake feat Justin Bieber- Let Me Love You
Here we see a girl who is ready to end a relationship but Bieber pleads with his love to stay and receive his love. He tries to explain to her that there will be bad days between them and that is normal. Should they break up, Justin states that the heartbreak would kill him and send him to heaven. He thus asks his lover not to give up on their love and remember the times they had together leading up to this point they are in.
Many have speculated that the song is based on Justin’s relationship with Selena Gomez because he starts out by showcasing the problematic nature of their relationship and then proceeds to urge his girl to keep pushing on in the relationship.
6. David Guetta – Flames
This is their 7th collaboration and became their third top 10 together as of May 2018. It was able to hit #9 on the UK official charts. In the US it peaked at the 4th position and secured its position within the Billboard Hot 100 for 72 weeks.
The message in the song is mainly about not giving up but keeping going and getting through the day despite the pain that you feel.
7. Avicii – Waiting For Love
This is the third single to Stories, released in the US on May 22. The singer gives a message of trying without giving up if you really want something. He finds beauty in perseverance and willpower.
In the chorus, he sings about his heart being broken and describes the gradual process of how he dealt with it. He first gives up hope then opens up his heart for another love thus letting himself be exposed and vulnerable.
8. James Arthur & Anne – Marie – Rewrite The Stars
The song is a soundtrack from the film The Greatest Showman. Lyrically, the song is about two people trying to shape their destinies so that they can be the ones for each other. They have a number of obstacles that they are encountering that make it feel impossible but they are not giving up on each other.
9. Selena Gomez – Wolves
This is about a journey to finding love. It could have drawn inspiration from Selena’s relationship with Justin Bieber. They had an on-and-off relationship between 2011 and 2014.
Selena explains how she looks for love in anyone thus expressing the fact that she is lonely and how she just wants to feel something. She went through a substance abuse phase to try and forget the pain of what she went through.
10. Christina Perri – A Thousand Years
“A Thousand Years” is about eternal love and it was written for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Perri sings about how her love for lover is one that has been cemented through time and he should not worry.
11. Jordin Sparks feat Chris Brown – No Air
This was the second single from American Idol Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks. Its massive commercial success led to it going triple platinum in the US and topping charts in Australia and New Zealand.
Lyrically, Jordin sings about not being capable of living without her man. It is hard for her to breathe because love is her air and now she misses it.
12. Pink – Try
This is a pop rock ballad about the risks with love and no matter the consequences we should always try. When you desire someone, there is a likelihood of someone getting hurt in the process but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes you have to agree to try and see it through by listening to your heart. You can’t just give up because things look bad.
13. Clean Bandit – Rather Be
It is a love song about being completely content with the person you are with and the lyrics point toward a long-distance relationship. It was written by the band along with songwriter Jimmy Napes. Jimmy drew inspiration from his wife.
The song was able to make its debut at number one on the UK charts and was the highest and fastest-selling single of January 2014.
14. Zedd, Maren Morris, Grey – The Middle
Morris mainly sings about trying to find a compromise between her and a lover in order to save a relationship. The two have been in a state of conflict and Morris has had enough and just wants to save the relationship.
Zedd stated that the meaning of the chorus was tied to when you have an argument with someone and they won’t just agree to disagree.
15. Louis Tomlinson – Back To You
The song talks about Louis’ willingness to stay in a relationship that is unhealthy and brings harm to him simply because he loves his significant other way too much. He always finds himself going back to her.
This is the second song released by Louis Tomlinson as a solo artist. When asked if it was about his on-off relationship with girlfriend Eleanor Calder, he stated he just draws inspiration from the most extreme scenario of that kind of relationship as there are a lot of people who find themselves stuck in that sort of relationship. It wasn’t specifically about him.
16. Trey Songz – Heart Attack
In this track, Trey sings about both his significant other and him wanting to leave the relationship but their love is still keeping them together. He is afraid of losing her since she won’t be the same person he fell in love with after changing and he’ll never get that person back.
The song is off the album Chapter V released in 2012.

The song is about Post singing about the failed relationships of his past and wallowing in the idea that his situation won’t improve in the near future. The relationship has taken a negative toll on him and ideally, he should get out but he doesn’t want to give up on it. He would rather just persevere through it all.
