Amy Winehouse’s best friend has praised Sheridan Smith for saving the singer’s life two years before her death, dubbing the actress an ‘angel’.

Tyler James, 39, revealed that Sheridan, 39, had raised the alarm after finding Amy ‘close to death’ after she had reportedly drunk an entire bottle of Night nurse.

According to The Sun, this was the only time Amy was rushed to A&E despite being taken to hospital multiple times.

Tyler explained: ‘Sheridam saved Amy’s life two years before she died. Sheridan was an angel who always did her best for Amy.

‘She would have been dead years earlier if it hadn’t been for Sheridan. I will always be grateful to her because she gave me that extra time with Amy.’

He added: ‘Sheridan was an amazing friend to Amy. And Amy was to her. They both had demons and mental health issues to face and they helped each other through them. She was a true friend.’

Tyler says Sheridan woke him up at 6am to tell him there was ‘something wrong with Amy’, and believes ‘it would have been the end’ if Sheridan hadn’t raised the alarm as the Night Nurse she had taken had enough paracetamol to kill her.

Two years later, Amy died at the age of 27 in 2011 after suffering alcohol poisoning.

Tyler and Amy had been friends since meeting at the Sylvia Young Theatre School as teenagers and his new book, My Amy, reveals the story of their friendship.

Amy and Sheridan had met in 2009 at a live music event and hit it off straight away, according to the book.

The singer had long battled drink and drug addictions as well as the eating disorder bulimia and had five times the drink drive limit of alcohol in her blood when she died, according to the post mortem.
