In 2022, there was a massive buzz over one of Spotify Wrapped’s moods: a lot of people were apparently into what has been termed as “Goblincore music”. The genre derives its name from the folklore of goblins that is based on the celebration of nature and natural ecosystems. It manifests itself in the aesthetic and subculture, involving an appeal for rustic elements like animals, mushrooms, insects, soil, and second-hand objects. It creates the overall vibe and illusion of something ancient and enchanting. As Mashable explained in 2020, “it’s a gritty, semi-occult version of the cottage-core aesthetic that started on Tumblr.”

The idea of Goblicore became a thing in online communities mostly during the pandemic and has over 74k subscribers on the subreddit, and the number is increasing every day. The music virtuoso Tim McMillan describes Goblincore music as combining “daring instrumental trickery with a sharp sense of musical wit”. It has an innate mysterious and magical aura about it that appeals to listeners, and shows a blend of acoustic-styled music genres.

The Goblincore compilation of Spotify includes 52 songs of which the first 10 include:

  • ‘Carnival of the Animals: The Swan’ by Camille Saint-Saëns, Isata Kanneh-Mason, Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, and Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
  • ‘Parliament Of Owls’ by Agnes Obel.
  • ‘Pastoral’ by Christian Löffler.
  • ‘Sea Change’ by Stephan Moccio.
  • ‘Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons: Spring 1-2012’ by Max Richter, Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin, Daniel Hope, and André de Ridder.
  • ‘Song From A Secret Garden’ by Rolf Løvland & Alexander Rybak
  • ‘Summer from Kikujiro’ by Joe Hisaishi
  • ‘Suite bergamasque, L.75: III. Clair de lune’ by Claude Debussy and Alice Sara Ott
  • ‘Fantasia on Greensleeves’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams
  • ‘River Waltz’ by Lang Lang and Alexandre Desplat

Marianelli’s ‘Mrs. Darcy’ also became a favorite with its intricate weaves of fantasy music. Along with the “Goblincore” playlist emerged Spotify’s “Goblincore Lo-Fi Playlist: Aesthetic Music to Study, Soothing Forest Mixtape with Cottagecore Vibes”, a playlist the platform describes as the “Summertime Chillout Music Ensemble”, including tracks like ‘Woodland Creatures’, ‘Shy Goblin’ and ‘Mushroom Forest’.

The genre of ‘Goblincore’ is based on the appreciation of aspects of nature that is not considered “conventionally beautiful”, and alternative names for the subculture include ‘crowcore’, ‘dirtcore’, ‘cottagegoth’, and ‘feralcore’.
